Workshop for stakeholders: Application of stable isotopes for determination of origin and authenticity of food, 15 June, 2017 / 20.06.2017

A workshop for experts from the Ministry of agriculture, forestry and food and the Inspectorate of the Republic of Slovenia for agriculture, forestry, hunting and fishery was organised on June 15, 2017.

Prof. Nives Ogrinc and prof. Sonja Lojen presented the potential and examples of application of stable isotopes for the determination of the origin and authenticity of food in combination with elemental fingerprinting and chemical profiling. A basic introduction into the isotope chemistry and mechanisms that govern the isotopic composition of light elements (H, C, N, O, S) in nature and during food production and processing was given. The 26 attendees got acquainted with the isotope analyses, elemental analysis, basic approaches for chemical profiling and chemometric methods for the interpretation of results. Practical examples including the authentication of wine, fruit juices and hones, as well as milk products and vegetables in terms of botanical, geographical origin and production methods were given.
